IV. Offertorium

1. Domine Jesu Christe

Every note of this movement was written by Mozart, and has survived intact.

Domine Jesu Christe,

Lord Jesus Christ,

Rex gloriae,

King of Glory,

libera animas omnium fidelium

deliver the souls of the faithful departed

de functorum de pœnis inferni,

from the punishments of hell,

et de profundo lacu.

and from the deep lake.

Libera eas de ore leonis,

Deliver them from the mouth of the lion,

ne absorbeat eas tartarus,

may the abyss not swallow them up,

ne cadant in obscurum.

may they not fall into darkness.

Sed signifer, Sanctus Michael,

But may the holy standard-bearer, Saint Michael,

repræsentet eas in lucem sanctam.

lead them to that holy light.

Quam olim Abrahæ promisiti,

Which of old thou didst promise to Abraham,

et semini ejus.

and to his seed.

2. Hostias

The vocal parts for this movement are by Mozart. The orchestration is by Süßmayr, and is not derived from the vocal parts directly, but does, of course, follow the harmonic progression of them.

Hostias et preces tibi Domine, laudis offerimus,

Sacrifices and prayers to thee O Lord we offer,

tu suscipe pro animabus illis,

with praise, O receive them from the souls of those

quarum hodie memoriam facimus;

whom we commemorate today;

fac eas Domine, de morte transire ad vitam.

make them O Lord to pass from death to life.

Quam olim Abrahæ promisisti,

Which of old thou didst promise to Abraham,

et semini ejus.

and to his seed.

V. Sanctus

The music for this movement was written entirely by Süßmayr.

Sanctus, sanctus, sanctus,

Holy, holy, holy,

Dominus Deus Sabaoth.

Lord God of Sabaoth.

Pleni sunt cœli et terra gloria tua.

Heaven and earth are full of thy glory.

Hosanna in excelsis.

Hosanna in the highest.

VI. Benedictus

This movement is often referred to as the loveliest Benedictus which Mozart didn’t write, as every note is by Süßmayr.

Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in excelsis.

Hosanna in the highest.

VII. Agnus Dei

The music for this movement was written entirely by Süßmayr.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world,

dona eis requiem.

grant them rest.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world,

dona eis requiem.

grant them rest.

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,

O Lamb of God, that takest away the sins of the world,

dona eis requiem, sempiternam.

grant them rest everlasting.

VIII. Communio

The music for this movement was written entirely by Süßmayr, but it skilfully recapitulates, parodies and recycles much of the music from the opening movement, which was entirely by Mozart.

Lux æterna luceat eis, Domine:

May everlasting light shine upon them, O Lord,

cum sanctis tuis in æternum, quia pius es.

with your saints forever, you are kind.

Requiem æternum, dona eis Domine,

Eternal rest, grant unto them O Lord,

et lux perpetua luceat eis.

and let light perpetual shine upon them.

Cum sanctis tuis in æternum,

And with your saints in eternity,

quia pius es.

because you are so merciful.
